Titian's Painting, The Entombment of Christ & His Use of Colour in Art

I wish my readers a safe and happy Easter.

This painting is Titian’s, The Entombment of Christ. He painted this topic several times. Titian reduced the contrast of edges in much of his painting. He used paints with a dark value and placed beside some dark values, small areas of light. Titian used this technique to emphasize certain features in his paintings. He also moved viewers through his paintings. The lightest colour is the shroud. This contrasts with the dark tomb. Figures emerge from the dark background. Titian was a master with colour and his works were studied by the Impressionists.

da Vinci's Painting, "The Last Supper" & Linear Perspective in Art

This painting is Leonardo da Vinci’s, The Last Supper. In the second image I have placed red lines that follow the edges along the walls and ceiling. I could do this with all edges and they would all point to Christ’s head, the vanishing point on the horizon line. I did a prior post about linear perspective. In this painting, da Vinci used one point linear perspective. Linear perspective gives the illusion of 3 dimensional images on a 2 dimensional support. Converging parallel lines move towards a vanishing point(s) on the horizon line (eye level). Da Vinci used linear perspective to emphasize the figure of Christ.

The Picture Plane in Fine Art

The picture plane in art is the flat surface on which artists paint, i.e. canvas. This flat surface is also a make-believe plane; artists can create false spatial impressions. Forms can seem flat on the picture plane, i.e the lower edge of the water. Forms can be behind the picture plane, i.e. the windmill and green trees. Forms can appear in front of the picture plane. In my painting, Impression Windmill, my forms are behind the picture plane and create a feeling of depth and space. In the image I altered with Photoshop, I made the bottom fence extend in front of the picture plane. The fence is protruding into the viewers’ space. Artists may paint a figure with the lower leg stepping outside and in front of the picture plane. There are many other forms that artists use to create an illusion of space extending in front of the picture plane, i.e. the petal of a flower, the wing of a bird. These are intimate and animated connections with viewers.

Colour Contrast in Art - My Unfinished Painting

This image is a painting that I have not yet finished. I will likely eliminate the building on the left. I love colours and their exciting effects. I used the complementary colours (hues), orange and blue; green and red. In a prior post I wrote about complementary hues and simultaneous contrast. Complementary hues when placed beside each other are enhanced. Colours are affected by other colours. The mountains are a muted violet hue. They are near the blue sky and the green trees. When I painted the mountains I used cool blues. However the cool blue of the sky and green of the trees affect the colour of the mountains. The mountains are a warmer violet. Although they were painted blue, we see the violet hue because of the effect of colour contrast, colour temperatures and complements.

Eye Movement in Paintings, About An Article by James Gurney

I read an interesting article in the April/May 2010, issue of the magazine, International Artist. The article was written by James Gurney, artist, author and illustrator of the Dinotopia books. The article was on eye tracking and the design of pictures. He had paintings reviewed by Eyetools, Inc. This firm’s technology records viewers’ gazes as they move through paintings. The findings showed that viewers’ eyes did not move in a curve or circular direction. Their eyes moved from one point of interest to another. Eyes do not necessarily go to an element on the golden grid. They went to strong elements in the painting. All viewers do not move through the painting in the same manner. Viewers are not passive and not controlled by a composition. Gurney concluded that artists shouldn’t think in abstract design elements alone. They have a role but human and narrative elements have a strong impact on the viewers’ movement through the painting. I was taught the elements and principles of art. I know that certain elements have more visual weight than other elements. Faces and figures have significant weight. Contrast of elements has weight. Principles of unity, balance and more are still necessary. For me the article confirmed my opinion that elements of art play an important role in paintings.

My Painting, "The Wreck" - Why It Will Be in My August Exhibit

I am considering the paintings I will display at my art exhibit this August. This painting, The Wreck, is a favourite painting. It has been sold as a print and received Zazzle’s Today’s Best Award. I like the triangular structural composition and the overlap by the wreck of the foreground, middle ground and background. The triangle is not on its base adding instability, tension and excitement to the painting. I used my much-loved colours (hues). This is a tetrad colour pattern. It has 2 sets of complements that are equally spaced on the colour wheel – orange, blue, red and green.

In August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market. http://www.artforallcanada.org.

Sketching - Male Head after Hals

This is a quick sketch I did of a male head after Hals. The light is coming from the right front. The form is considered a sphere. Therefore the form shadow on the left curves around the sphere. I love doing these quick drawings. They are expressive and I like doing hats. I have sometimes changed hair and added earrings to these works from the masters. When I sketch from life, I look for people with expressive hair, clothes, piercing and more.

Changes that Improved My Painting - By the Pond

By the Pond
Original Fine Art Painting
Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars
20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches

This is my new painting. I liked the overall scene but was not happy with the gray rocks in the background or the gray stack of lumber. I changed the colours to pink and green with orange respectively. The main colours (hues) are now blue, orange, green and red. These colours are 2 sets of complements. They are a tetrad; there are 4 colours equally spaced around the colour wheel. I also altered the shape of the rocks on the right. The rocks on the right were two shapes; the front rock and background rocks were divided by a thin strip of water. The shapes were not unified. I moved the front rock so it would overlap the back rocks. I changed the scene to meet my objectives.

Sketching Faces

I love sketching, particularly faces. Like most artists, I continue to learn and sketch from works of the masters. This male head is after Van Dyck. I keep a sketchbook and pencil in my purse and sketch the wonderful faces of people around me. I live near a mall by the art college. The students express themselves in their faces and clothes. The spiky hair styles; the piercings; the colourful and different clothes all inspire me. Drawing also maintains my eye and hand coordination.

Winter Storm in My Fine Art Painting

I did this painting, Winter Storm, a few years ago. It is watercolour on paper. I wanted to achieve the effects of a winter storm. I painted thick ice on the trees. You can see the brushstrokes of blowing wind. The lone figure amplifies the isolation of a winter storm. The warm light on the wall contrasts and enhances the dominant cool temperature of the painting.

Nature's Waterfall, My New Fine Art Painting - Keeping Eyes in the Painting

Nature’s Waterfall
Original Fine Art Painting
Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars
20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches

This is my new painting, Nature’s Waterfall, and the image in gray scale (values). I was excited about painting the colours and reflections in the rocks and water. The water and waterfall act as a bridge between the 2 rock shapes, a compositional structure. I was careful to make the water flow and move to the left and down towards the bottom. The left rock shape and the shape of the water curve towards the upper right. I ensured that the viewer’s eyes did not move off the right side. You can see the brushstrokes at the water's top moving into the painting.

Modeling Cylindrical Forms in Art – Tree Trunk, Human Limb

These images are details from 2 different paintings; a tree trunk and an upper leg. They are also shown in gray scale (values). In a prior post I wrote about modeling cylindrical forms. The light, middle tone and shadow areas of cylinders have soft edges. These forms do not have the hard edges that occur when 2 planes of a cube meet. These soft edges and modeling are seen in my painting of the tree trunk. Limbs of humans are routinely viewed and modeled as cylindrical forms. However artists can make edges of the light, mid tones and shadow areas harder. I did this in my painting of a dancer. I wanted to make the structure of the limbs more sculptural and dynamic in character. Muscles in contraction are often painted with harder edges. Artists have wonderful opportunities to express subjects to meet their emotional goals. I also enjoyed painting the reflection of the cool green grass in the shadow of the tree trunk.

Sculptural Form & Space in My Dancer Painting

I did this painting of a dancer several years ago. It is watercolor paint on paper. The painting is also shown in gray scale (values). I was interested in emphasizing the sculptural form and muscles of the dancer. The edges of the light, mid tones and shadows are hard; these strong contrasts of values accentuate the structure of the figure. In my painting, the background is blurred but the figure stands out in space. This similar technique is seen in the painting by master artist Velazquez, Pablo De Valladolid. [Velazquez did not follow the rules of perspective. By making the background disappear, he achieved greater immediacy and liveliness.] (Velazquez, The Technique of Genius; J. Brown, C. Garrido)

Colours, Values & Unity in Summer, Active Paintings

Outdoor Market
Original Painting
Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars
20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches

I enjoyed painting this colourful outdoor market scene. I was taking a summer walk when I saw this view. I added additional umbrellas and the dog. I painted several vibrant colours (hues) in each light area, form and cast shadow. The dark dog is in contrast with the light, sunlit pavement. This contrast enhances both values (gray scalesimultaneous contrast). I also added thick strokes of paint in light areas. In the summer heat, the people walking away on the right side are painted in blurred atmospheric colours. I was concerned about achieving unity in this active painting and connected the dark colours to address my concern. In the gray scale image, follow the dark cast shadows under the boxes on the left. These dark cast shadows connect to the first figure and continue under the boxes. The dark colour then connects to both the man with his back to the viewer and the dog. Continue and see the dark cast shadow under the umbrella stand on the right side. This was one technique that the artist, Edgar Degas, used to unify his many active paintings (See, The Orchestra of the Opera [In the Orchestra Pit] & The Cotton Market, New Orleans).
