Baroque Art. Caravaggio's Painting, Conversion of Saint Paul
The Baroque era of art lasted through the 1600s and arose from the Renaissance and Mannerist eras. These artists achieved unity in their paintings using diagonal compositions and light and color. Caravaggio was an Italian artist who achieved dramatic contrasts through light and shadow. In his painting, Conversion of Saint Paul, Caravaggio’s use of light and shadow gives the scene more drama and force. The foreshortening of the figure adds to the drama. (J. Vigue)
