In my painting, Gymnast, I
again wanted to convey the strength and power of the figure. I mentioned modeling the figure is a technique to convey
strength. I modeled the figure with warm light, a mid tone where appropriate
and a cool shadow. Italian artist, Caravaggio modeled his figures and gives
them a powerful look. Caravaggio was considered a leader in using dark values
(gray scale) where the form emerged from the dark background and form shadow
into the light. He achieved drama using strong chiaroscuro; pronounced contrast
between light and shadow. In my painting, the gymnast is also turning toward
the left. I used a light muted blue white to push the leg and upper body back.
This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting
techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel
Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).
