Perspective & Atmosphere in Art; My Painting - Abandoned Barn in Winter

I wish my Canadian friends and readers a safe and happy Canada Day. I also wish my U.S. friends and readers a safe and happy Independence Day. My next post will be on Monday July 5. Happy holidays.

I did this painting, Abandoned Barn in Winter, a number of years ago. The second image shows perspective lines that will converge to 2 vanishing points on the horizon line (eye level of artist or viewer). I have done prior posts about linear perspective. In this image the horizon line is not seen. It is a high horizon line and therefore you can see the snow topped roof. The vanishing points are not seen. One frequently sees vanishing points outside a painting. I have taken care to ensure the background does not compete with the foreground; a problem in linear perspective. There are rows of dead bushes that lead into the painting. The painting is primarily middle to dark values. This adds to the bleak atmosphere of the scene. The light values are the cool snow with reflections of the sky. The dominant temperature of the painting is cool.

In August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market. You enter the Gallery through Rainbow Cinemas, Market Square. Viewing the exhibits is free. At the top of this site is a link to Art for All Canada’s Gallery. Artist, E. Hopper's Use of Perspective in His Paintings

This is American artist, Edward Hopper’s painting, Sunlight in Cafeteria. Hopper created interior and exterior space by using 2 point perspective. Hopper used the architectural lines to create an illusion of depth. Although Hopper painted a number of topics, i.e. seascapes, urban architecture and cityscapes were also major topics. Hopper used light and shadow to create feelings and atmosphere. I have added lines to Hopper’s painting. The horizon line (HL) shows the eye level of the artist and viewer. The right side shows the vanishing point (VP1) where all design lines pointing right converge on the horizon line. The outside building’s design lines also converge at this vanishing point. The left vanishing point (VP2) has the convergence of structural design lines pointing toward the left. In this painting you see a third vanishing point; this is likely an error caused by photographing and loading the image.

Repetition & Rhythm in Fine Art Paintings

Repetition in art is a use of a similar element throughout the painting. Repetition may produce a dominance of one element, i.e. similar shapes. It produces harmony and a rhythmic movement. Rhythm is achieved by repetition of elements in a pattern and results in movement of the eye through the painting. It is a result of a continuing pattern. Rhythm provides unity and balance in a painting.

In my painting, Dock Pilings, I have repeated the shape and colors of the pilings and reflections. I have used the rhythm of the pilings and water to create movement and unity.

Painting Techniques to Emphasize Forms in Art

This painting, Lear Banishing Cordelia, is by Swiss artist, Henry Fuseli. It is in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s permanent collection (AGO) but currently in the exhibit, Drama and Desire – Artists and the Theatre. Fuseli emphasized the banishment of Cordelia by Lear. Lear’s finger and toe point toward Cordelia. He gazes at Cordelia in anger. The highlight on the front knee is facing Cordelia. Fuseli also used clothing to outline the forms and again emphasize the direction towards Cordelia. The cloth on the arm and leg circles these forms. Look at the painting and view other techniques the artist used to emphasize the relationship between Corderlia and Lear.

A Visual Artist's View of Ontario's Gallery Exhibit, "Drama & Desire"

This Saturday I went to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) to see the exhibit, Drama and Desire – Artists and the Theatre. It covers the era from the French Revolution up to World War 1. The exhibit is about the artists’ paintings and drawings, their emotions and their inspiration from the theatre. The exhibit is on display until September 26 and it is well worth a visit. The above painting by Jacques-Louis David, The Oath of the Horatii, is one of many paintings and drawings in the exhibit. Since the AGO had sound & light effects, you might want to take ear plugs. As a visual artist, I found these effects interfered with the art. I hope to visit a few more times and I will be taking ear plugs. The paintings and drawings are wonderful. I examined the artists’ modeling of skin. The achievements in painting different materials, i.e. silk, velvet, were outstanding. I was able to study works by Degas; his compositional structures and colors. I examined the masterful designs of these artists, Ingres, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and more. This is the only site in North America for the exhibit. It is a large display of wonderful works. Check the AGO’s link on this site to view information about days and hours it is open.

Balance in Paintings; A Principle in Art

Art work on a 2 dimensional support must have balance and therefore stability. In considering balance, artists look at an imaginary vertical line running through the centre of the support. The two halves of the support have stability as a whole. Elements of art have different degrees of visual weight. Balance can be achieved by similar elements on both sides of the vertical line. However, a more interesting composition is a steelyard. It is a small weight balancing a large weight. The small weight acts as a fulcrum. The farther a small and isolated object is from the middle, the greater the visual weight. Location and distance are important elements when considering balance. Other elements of art should also be considered. In my above painting, the partial tree on the left balances the figure and tree on the right side. Figures have great visual weight.

Line as an Element of Art; Invitation to My August Painting Exhibit

Line is an element of art. Line may be straight or curved; short or long; thick and thin, and more. Line also has emotional properties. Line can create feelings. These feelings can be sombre, tired or energetic. Lines can describe shape and provide direction. Eyes move from thick to thin line. Line can be a simple stroke or the edge of different values. This print is of my painting, The Grain Mill. In this painting the majority of lines are created by value change.

Luminosity in Art; A Study of My Partial Painting

This is the top right half of my painting in progress. I wanted to emphasize the luminous color approach. This approach is contrasts of intensity (saturation); similar to Turner’s approach. Luminosity is not illumination. Luminosity describes the light color radiating from an object or contained by an object. Illumination is created by a light source; and has shadows. In my painting, the light side (illumination by sunlight) of the rock is also the luminous area. There is no white in luminous paintings. The luminous area is a pure light hue; the lightest value in the painting. Value is a powerful element of color and therefore dark and sharp contrasts of values should be limited and not used near the luminous area(s) if used at all. Although hard to detect on my image, the light value near the rock and the form shadow are muted blue violets. The majority of my painting is middle tones (values). The light value areas are limited to the rock and surrounding area. I have used some contrast of temperatures in the sky and trees but these areas are muted.

Value in Paintings; An Important Element of Color

The above is my painting,Outdoor Market and an image of the painting in gray scale (values). The painting is predominantly middle and light values; it has some dark values. The values contribute to a light sunny day and atmosphere.

Value is an important element of color. It is so important that many books and artists consider it a separate element in art. My teacher taught it as an element of color. His view is correct in my opinion. If you alter value, you alter other color elements, i.e intensity. Value in art is white, black and grays. On computer programs, it is called gray scale mode. Value can describe objects, shapes and space. It includes emotional aspects, atmosphere, gloom, happiness and dramatic moods. Value is used to model forms. It is recommended that the focal point in a painting have the lightest light and darkest dark. Paintings should have a dominant value, i.e. dark, middle tones, light.

The Baroque Era of Art

One of my favourite eras of art is the Baroque era. This era was during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The artists painted images that expressed emotions, i.e. fear, misery, happiness. They were often inspired by dramatic plays. Baroque artists tried to involve viewers as witnesses and not just as onlookers. Artists painting during this era include El Greco, Velazquez, Ribera, Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and many more. The above painting, The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus, was painted by Rubens around 1618. Rubens shows us brutality and fear. The women’s faces and postures reflect their dread. Even the rearing horses add to the overall scene of terror and aggression.

Linear Perspective, Color Approach in My Painting, "Covered Bridge"

This is an image of my painting, Covered Bridge, and the image in gray scale (values). The painting is in 2 point linear perspective. I prevented the viewer’s eyes moving immediately into the background using a number of techniques. The front of the bridge is almost parallel to the viewer; very close to 1 point perspective. There are light values on the front roof and on the front left inside of the bridge. There are also trees at the back of the bridge. These elements reduce the competition of the background with the foreground. The sunlight strikes the right side of the bridge and therefore the local color is at the front of the bridge. The color approach is contrast of color temperature. This approach is similar to impressionism. Although my painting is primarily middle values, there are more dark values that you would normally see in paintings by the impressionists.

Repression of Art; Repression of People

Men's hoodie with image of my painting, "Evening Sail". On sale at Zazzle.com.

Addendum: After I wrote the below post, I realized people in certain countries and/or under religious restrictions do not have the right to paint or view art. A number of years ago I searched the internet to read the Hamas’ Charter. Despite the 1929 Hebron massacre of the Jews and other aggressions, like many I was dismayed that Palestinians (including those in Gaza) gave Hamas a parliamentary election victory in 2006. I believe voting is a responsibility more than a right. Hamas’ repressive views of art are minor compared to their other views. How can Palestinians and others advocate the persecution and abuse of girls and women? How do they support the genocide of world Jewry and others; the destruction of Israel? How do they support an abusive education system? Therefore I recognize my views on art are minor compared to other issues. Given the above views of the flotilla activists did they consciously try to transport violence and weapons into Gaza?

My Post: In prior posts, I wrote about different color approaches to painting. Today artists are not constrained to paint in a specific style as they had been, i.e. academic approach, abstract expressionism. Artists are not constrained by Galleries as there are many ways to get our art shown to the public, i.e. the internet. Many people view my art and consider it impressionism. My art has many elements of impressionism. However, I do not feel constrained to paint into the light and I prefer transparent shadows. People also have the wonderful opportunity to view different styles and works by artists. While many galleries still have their opinions on art, besides the internet there are co-operatives and other organizations that give viewers this opportunity to see wonderful art.
