Horizontal Compositional Structure & Use of Light, Artist Edward Hopper
American artist, Edward Hopper painted the above painting, Early Sunday Morning (1930). I like the way the sun shines from the right and the light on the barber’s pole, fire hydrant and the left half of the blinds. Hopper used a horizontal compositional structure and this structure adds tranquility to the scene. The lines and shapes are parallel to the ground plane and therefore do not resist the pull of gravity. The lines and shapes appear at rest. The painting is balanced by the lesser number of vertical lines and shapes, i.e. barber’s pole, building on the upper right, vertical doors. (H. Poore, Composition in Art; N. Goldstein, Design and Composition)
