Conveying Powerful Figures in Art, My Painting Gymnastic Strength

I again wanted to convey a figure’s power and strength in my painting, Gymnastic Strength.  The outer contour lines of the figure show the muscles of the gymnast. Since the figure is turning slightly towards the left, the right upper arm muscles are larger than the left arm muscles. I also used modeling of the figure with light, mid tone and shadow to convey strength. My focus was on the upper arms, particularly the right upper arm. The lighting had been from above; I changed the lighting to come from the right upper side. This allowed me to better convey the modeling of the figure. Michelangelo was a master at drawing and painting powerful figures. My single thick, impasto stroke of paint is the highlight on the right deltoid muscle to emphasize my focal area. The composition is also unique. The figure is in a central area on the support; the figure is cropped. This composition gives more strength to the gymnast.
