I previously wrote about the triangular compositional structure. The triangle on its vertical midline is stable. The apex of the triangle is a location of emphasis. This structure is excellent for uniting 3 shapes. American artist, Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) painted the second above painting, The Chess Players (1876). Eakins used a triangular composition. The focal point is the standing figure at the apex. (H. Poore, Composition in Art; N. Goldstein, Design and Composition) French artist Cezanne painted the top painting "The Card Players" (1894-1895) using a bridge composition to unite the 2 players.
