Perspective & Atmosphere in Art; My Painting - Abandoned Barn in Winter
I wish my Canadian friends and readers a safe and happy Canada Day. I also wish my U.S. friends and readers a safe and happy Independence Day. My next post will be on Monday July 5. Happy holidays.
I did this painting, Abandoned Barn in Winter, a number of years ago. The second image shows perspective lines that will converge to 2 vanishing points on the horizon line (eye level of artist or viewer). I have done prior posts about linear perspective. In this image the horizon line is not seen. It is a high horizon line and therefore you can see the snow topped roof. The vanishing points are not seen. One frequently sees vanishing points outside a painting. I have taken care to ensure the background does not compete with the foreground; a problem in linear perspective. There are rows of dead bushes that lead into the painting. The painting is primarily middle to dark values. This adds to the bleak atmosphere of the scene. The light values are the cool snow with reflections of the sky. The dominant temperature of the painting is cool.
In August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market. You enter the Gallery through Rainbow Cinemas, Market Square. Viewing the exhibits is free. At the top of this site is a link to Art for All Canada’s Gallery. Gallery hours are from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm daily. My exhibit will be installed the afternoon on Friday July 30, 2010 and ends the morning of Monday August 30th. http://www.artforallcanada.org.
