Balance in Paintings; A Principle in Art

Art work on a 2 dimensional support must have balance and therefore stability. In considering balance, artists look at an imaginary vertical line running through the centre of the support. The two halves of the support have stability as a whole. Elements of art have different degrees of visual weight. Balance can be achieved by similar elements on both sides of the vertical line. However, a more interesting composition is a steelyard. It is a small weight balancing a large weight. The small weight acts as a fulcrum. The farther a small and isolated object is from the middle, the greater the visual weight. Location and distance are important elements when considering balance. Other elements of art should also be considered. In my above painting, the partial tree on the left balances the figure and tree on the right side. Figures have great visual weight.
