Repetition in art is a use of a similar element throughout the painting. Repetition may produce a dominance of one element, i.e. similar shapes. It produces harmony and a rhythmic movement. Rhythm is achieved by repetition of elements in a pattern and results in movement of the eye through the painting. It is a result of a continuing pattern. Rhythm provides unity and balance in a painting.
In my painting, Dock Pilings, I have repeated the shape and colors of the pilings and reflections. I have used the rhythm of the pilings and water to create movement and unity.
In August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market.
