In my above painting, Gymnast on Balance Beam, I wanted to use
the background to convey movement. The figure is static so adding movement was
important. As is my practice I used modeling to convey the strength and power
of the figure. I looked to French
artist, Edgar Degas when I considered my composition and background. Degas was
a master of composition. The repetition of the ceiling’s lines and windows in
Degas’ painting, Miss Lala at the Circus
add to the movement in this painting. I also used lines and repetition to
create movement in my painting.
This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting
techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel
Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).
