Conveying Calm in Landscape Art, My Painting Boats in Cove

In my landscape paintings, I frequently convey a sense of calm and peace. This was my objective in my painting, Boats in Cove. My painting is a dominant cool temperature. It has little contrast in value (dark, light, gray scale) except for my focal point – the white boat. The dominant value is mid tone. The format is horizontal; this also contributes to a sense of calm. The right angle masts of the boat add harmony to the painting. There are few hard edges. Some people have described my landscape paintings as ethereal.

Colors in Light, Shadow in Art, My Painting Coast Line

In my painting, Coast Line, I wanted to paint the colors (hues) in the light and shadows along the California coast.  I painted strokes of different colors in the shapes.  Viewers can see the purple, brown and yellow gold strokes in the shadows of the rock face. Different colored brush strokes are also painted in the light shapes. This technique was used by the impressionists.

Background & Movement in Art, My Painting Gymnast on Balance Beam

In my above painting, Gymnast on Balance Beam, I wanted to use the background to convey movement. The figure is static so adding movement was important. As is my practice I used modeling to convey the strength and power of the figure.  I looked to French artist, Edgar Degas when I considered my composition and background. Degas was a master of composition. The repetition of the ceiling’s lines and windows in Degas’ painting, Miss Lala at the Circus add to the movement in this painting. I also used lines and repetition to create movement in my painting.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Light, Shadow, Sfumato in Art, My Painting Study Golf

In my painting, Study Golf, I wanted to convey the gesture and form of the golfer looking at the golf course with light, shadow and hues (color).  I modeled the form of the golfer in light, mid tones where appropriate and shadow with warm and cool hues respectively.  The modeling with values (gray scale) gives the figure a third dimension. The artist, Leonardo da Vinci developed the technique, sfumato that used fine changes from light to dark values and vice versa. The warm sun also casts a light on the ground which contrasts with the cool cast shadow and shadow on the ground.
