In my painting, Island
Boats (top) I wanted to paint the colorful boats in the busy harbour. My focal area is
where the yellow and white boats overlap. The diagonal line of boats creates an
interesting pattern and movement through the painting. When you look at the
boats, you can see I used 2 point linear perspective. The two sides of the boats
move towards different vanishing points on the horizon line. The mast on the
white boat overlaps the mid ground and background linking the planes together
and maintaining unity. The mast is at
right angles to the white boat and this contributes to harmony and strength of
the overall painting. The lower painting is by Monet, Boats on Beach Club. Monet did a number of paintings with boats. Monet also used boats' masts to link planes and create harmony and strength.
This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).
