Picture Plane, Depth, Mass in Art - My Painting, Dancer Tying Her Ballet Shoes
This is my painting, Dancer Tying her Ballet Shoes. I used a square support as I prefer it for single objects and figures. The pink ribbon on the dancer’s waist is the same colour as her leotards. I was careful to leave the blue colour of the tutu on both sides at the waist. I did not want to divide the tutu in 2 parts. The ends of the ribbon link downward and connect to the pink leotard. There is no real floor but the cast shadow provides a sense of depth. The bent arms and the foot on the right side pointing inward contribute to the feeling of space. The dancer is close to the picture plane. However, the figure has been modeled; it has mass and the illusion of a solid body. I previously noted that the straight side of the limb and the opposite curved side provide rhythm.
