Sketching Faces

I love sketching, particularly faces. Like most artists, I continue to learn and sketch from works of the masters. This male head is after Van Dyck. I keep a sketchbook and pencil in my purse and sketch the wonderful faces of people around me. I live near a mall by the art college. The students express themselves in their faces and clothes. The spiky hair styles; the piercings; the colourful and different clothes all inspire me. Drawing also maintains my eye and hand coordination.

Winter Storm in My Fine Art Painting

I did this painting, Winter Storm, a few years ago. It is watercolour on paper. I wanted to achieve the effects of a winter storm. I painted thick ice on the trees. You can see the brushstrokes of blowing wind. The lone figure amplifies the isolation of a winter storm. The warm light on the wall contrasts and enhances the dominant cool temperature of the painting.

Nature's Waterfall, My New Fine Art Painting - Keeping Eyes in the Painting

Nature’s Waterfall
Original Fine Art Painting
Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars
20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches

This is my new painting, Nature’s Waterfall, and the image in gray scale (values). I was excited about painting the colours and reflections in the rocks and water. The water and waterfall act as a bridge between the 2 rock shapes, a compositional structure. I was careful to make the water flow and move to the left and down towards the bottom. The left rock shape and the shape of the water curve towards the upper right. I ensured that the viewer’s eyes did not move off the right side. You can see the brushstrokes at the water's top moving into the painting.
