Nature's Waterfall, My New Fine Art Painting - Keeping Eyes in the Painting

Nature’s Waterfall
Original Fine Art Painting
Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars
20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches

This is my new painting, Nature’s Waterfall, and the image in gray scale (values). I was excited about painting the colours and reflections in the rocks and water. The water and waterfall act as a bridge between the 2 rock shapes, a compositional structure. I was careful to make the water flow and move to the left and down towards the bottom. The left rock shape and the shape of the water curve towards the upper right. I ensured that the viewer’s eyes did not move off the right side. You can see the brushstrokes at the water's top moving into the painting.

Modeling Cylindrical Forms in Art – Tree Trunk, Human Limb

These images are details from 2 different paintings; a tree trunk and an upper leg. They are also shown in gray scale (values). In a prior post I wrote about modeling cylindrical forms. The light, middle tone and shadow areas of cylinders have soft edges. These forms do not have the hard edges that occur when 2 planes of a cube meet. These soft edges and modeling are seen in my painting of the tree trunk. Limbs of humans are routinely viewed and modeled as cylindrical forms. However artists can make edges of the light, mid tones and shadow areas harder. I did this in my painting of a dancer. I wanted to make the structure of the limbs more sculptural and dynamic in character. Muscles in contraction are often painted with harder edges. Artists have wonderful opportunities to express subjects to meet their emotional goals. I also enjoyed painting the reflection of the cool green grass in the shadow of the tree trunk.

Sculptural Form & Space in My Dancer Painting

I did this painting of a dancer several years ago. It is watercolor paint on paper. The painting is also shown in gray scale (values). I was interested in emphasizing the sculptural form and muscles of the dancer. The edges of the light, mid tones and shadows are hard; these strong contrasts of values accentuate the structure of the figure. In my painting, the background is blurred but the figure stands out in space. This similar technique is seen in the painting by master artist Velazquez, Pablo De Valladolid. [Velazquez did not follow the rules of perspective. By making the background disappear, he achieved greater immediacy and liveliness.] (Velazquez, The Technique of Genius; J. Brown, C. Garrido)
