Image of my painting, Burpee Tomatoes and the image converted to a gray scale. See reproductions of my art at http://www.zazzle.com/arlenebabadartist.
The tomatoes are spheres in form. The warm sunlight is coming from the upper left. This area of the tomatoes is warm and light in value. I exaggerated the light. The mid tones (local colour) circle the spheres. The form shadow circles the outer edge of the sphere. The shadow is cool and darker than the mid tones. There are reflections easily seen from the middle orange tomato on the right bottom green tomato. Changes of colour temperature and value are not abrupt as was seen in rectangular forms. (See my post of Feb. 4).
The local colour is the colour of the object not in direct light or shadow. Some artists paint these middle tones with hues of the background. This technique helps unify the painting and integrate the object with its background.
