This is a value image of my painting, Lighthouse Landscape, as well as the original. This shows the painting from white through grays to black. The sky is lighter as we move back towards the horizon. The ground is lighter and more blue as we move back. This creates depth and is called atmospheric perspective. The dominant values are middle values. There are more dark values then light. The dominant colour temperature is cool. The warm sunlight comes from the left and the shadows are cool. When I first sketched this scene, I placed the water on the right side. This led the eye off the canvas. So I placed the water on the left side. The lighthouse on the right side and the diagonal inward shape of the land now prevents the eye moving off the canvas.
