Colour Temperatures in Painting & My Upcoming Exhibit

Fine art print of my painting, Burpee Tomatoes. See prints and more at http://www.zazzle.com/arlenebabadartist.

I am pleased to announce that in August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across the street from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market. You enter the Gallery through Rainbow Cinemas, Market Square. Viewing the exhibits is free. At the top of this site is a link to Art for All Canada’s Gallery. Gallery hours are from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm daily. My exhibit will be installed the afternoon on Friday July 30, 2010 and ends the morning of Monday August 30th.

Temperatures of colours can be cool or warm. It is best that you allow one temperature to be dominant in your paintings. Warm colours are orange, red, and yellow. Cool colours are blue, violet and green. White and black are cool but this can vary when a colour is added. I am currently painting a winter scene. The dominant temperature is cool. The snow on the ground reflects the cool violet blue of my sky colour. I have also added some yellow white to reflect the sunlight and add a warm colour to contrast with the dominant cool colours.

Location and Effects of Objects in Fine Art Paintings

Greeting card with image of my painting, Cherries. This card and other items with images of my painting are available at http://www.zazzle.com/arlenebabadartist.

When objects are close to the front edge of paintings, they reach into the viewers’ space. This creates intimacy and drama. When the main object faces forward, the object can appear animated. Objects further away from the front edge create atmosphere. There is more quiet space. There is also a sense of tranquillity and mystery. Artists can use both placements in their painting.

Making Brown & Gray Paints for Fine Art Painting

Travel mug with an image of my painting, The Wreck. The mug and other items with my painting are available at http://www.zazzle.com/arlenebabadartist. You can customize my products; change colour, style, etc.

I use a paint colour, Burnt Sienna. It is a warm orange brown. But I also mix paints to create brown colours. You can mix warm colours with green and make a variety of brown colours. You can mix orange, red or yellow with green paints. I don’t like to fully mix my colours. You can achieve a more interesting colour when you under mix your paints. To make gray colours, you can mix complementary colours, i.e. orange and blue. Grays have a cool hue base. If you add a little white to your gray mixtures, you will achieve an attractive gray colour.
