Sphere Forms in Art - Temperature, Value, Colour

The tomatoes are spheres in form. The warm sunlight is coming from the upper left. This area of the tomatoes is warm and light in value. I exaggerated the light. The mid tones (local colour) circle the spheres. The form shadow circles the outer edge of the sphere. The shadow is cool and darker than the mid tones. There are reflections easily seen from the middle orange tomato on the right bottom green tomato. Changes of colour temperature and value are not abrupt as was seen in rectangular forms. The local colour is the colour of the object not in direct light or shadow. Some artists paint these middle tones with hues of the background. This technique helps unify the painting and integrate the object with its background.

Painting Rectangular Forms - Light, Shadow, Local Colour

The covered bridge is rectangular in form and the wedge on top is part of a rectangle. The wedge should not be considered a cone. The warm light is coming from the right. This plane of the rectangle is warm and light in value. The plane of the rectangle in shadow and the cast shadow are not seen; they are opposite the plane in sunlight. The plane of the covered bridge facing the viewer is the local colour. As I wrote, with rectangular forms, the abrupt changes in colour temperature and value at the edge of the planes in sunlight and local colour make this painting more dramatic (see my post of Feb. 3). I have seen artists use rectangle forms to make their painting more dramatic although the object’s form might have been cylindrical.
