Painting a Coming Storm; Convey Power & Fury
The primary idea for my painting, Storm Cloud over Land was emotional and not descriptive. I wanted to convey the power and fury of the coming storm. The painting has a cool dominant temperature. I have limited it to 4 values (dark, light; gray scale). I try to limit my paintings to 4 values. I have seen some wonderful old master paintings that have been limited to 3 values. The dominant value is middle tone; there is a large dark value. The shapes and lines are primarily diagonal to enhance the tension and dynamic idea. I decided to make the dark cloud with visible brush work to again create movement. While most clouds are painted with smooth brush work, this did not meet my objective. Do you feel the power of the coming storm?
