Line as an Element of Art; Invitation to My August Painting Exhibit

Line is an element of art. Line may be straight or curved; short or long; thick and thin, and more. Line also has emotional properties. Line can create feelings. These feelings can be sombre, tired or energetic. Lines can describe shape and provide direction. Eyes move from thick to thin line. Line can be a simple stroke or the edge of different values. This print is of my painting, The Grain Mill. In this painting the majority of lines are created by value change.

In August 2010 my paintings will be exhibited at the Art for All Canada’s Rainbow Gallery. The Gallery is at 80 Front St. East across from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market. You enter the Gallery through Rainbow Cinemas, Market Square. Viewing the exhibits is free. At the top of this site is a link to Art for All Canada’s Gallery. Luminosity in Art; A Study of My Partial Painting

This is the top right half of my painting in progress. I wanted to emphasize the luminous color approach. This approach is contrasts of intensity (saturation); similar to Turner’s approach. Luminosity is not illumination. Luminosity describes the light color radiating from an object or contained by an object. Illumination is created by a light source; and has shadows. In my painting, the light side (illumination by sunlight) of the rock is also the luminous area. There is no white in luminous paintings. The luminous area is a pure light hue; the lightest value in the painting. Value is a powerful element of color and therefore dark and sharp contrasts of values should be limited and not used near the luminous area(s) if used at all. Although hard to detect on my image, the light value near the rock and the form shadow are muted blue violets. The majority of my painting is middle tones (values). The light value areas are limited to the rock and surrounding area. I have used some contrast of temperatures in the sky and trees but these areas are muted.

Value in Paintings; An Important Element of Color

The above is my painting,Outdoor Market and an image of the painting in gray scale (values). The painting is predominantly middle and light values; it has some dark values. The values contribute to a light sunny day and atmosphere.

Value is an important element of color. It is so important that many books and artists consider it a separate element in art. My teacher taught it as an element of color. His view is correct in my opinion. If you alter value, you alter other color elements, i.e intensity. Value in art is white, black and grays. On computer programs, it is called gray scale mode. Value can describe objects, shapes and space. It includes emotional aspects, atmosphere, gloom, happiness and dramatic moods. Value is used to model forms. It is recommended that the focal point in a painting have the lightest light and darkest dark. Paintings should have a dominant value, i.e. dark, middle tones, light.
