Shapes, Colours, Textures in My Fine Art Painting

In my painting, The Falls, there are 3 main shapes. The shapes are the sky, the top of the waterfall and the waterfall with spray. The main colours are blue and reddish orange muted with some blue. These colours are complementary colours. The colours enhance each other. Also, the temperature difference in the warm and cool colours enhances each colour. Although hard to see on low resolution, the waterfall and spray are actual textures.

Colours in Fine Art - Split Complements & Temperature

Colour is an element in art. In my painting, Burpee Tomatoes, the main colours are green and orange. These colours are split complementary colours. The colours are on each side of the complements. The complement for green is red. The complement for orange is blue. Since split complements have some of the complementary colour, each colour enhances the other. For example, the split complements for the colour, orange, are blue green and blue violet. Both split complements have blue; blue is the complement of orange. The temperature of the colour orange is warm. The temperature of the colour green is cool. Again, these contrasts in temperature enhance each colour. These colour contrasts create vibrant colours.

Texture - An Element in Fine Art

Woods in Winter

Texture is an element in art. There are 2 main textures. Depicted texture will not be felt by touch on the painting surface but it may look real, i.e. painting of an animal’s fur. Actual texture is seen and also felt on the picture’s surface. In my painting Woods in Winter, I have placed thick layers of paint for snow on the branches. We usually see texture in the light and local colours. Texture is not seen in the background. Occasionally texture is used to define a pattern of lines, shapes.
