White as a local colour is a yellow white. In the shadows it, reflects the colours around it. In this painting the shadows on the lighthouse are similar to the water, i.e. blue.

My Drawing from an Original Fine Art Painting by Terbrugghen

I frequently go to the Art Gallery of Ontario to sketch from statues or from paintings following a tradition by many of the old masters. My sketch is a detail from a painting by Dutch painter Hendrick Terbrugghen. The painting is oil on canvas and was painted around 1629. The painting called Melancholy, depicts a woman's head resting on her hand and arm. The light source is a candle. The woman has a scarf around her head and the woman and scarf reminded me of patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. My sketch is to honour those people who have died of cancer including my sister and mother and to honour those of us who survived.
